Ontario Fishing Guide Services : :

Grindstone Outfitters has been a full time guiding operation since 1993. We offer fly fishing guide trips on a variety of rivers in S.W. Ontario including the Saugeen River and Grand River. The experience of our guides is second to none on south central Ontario's wilderness waterways. In 1997 Grindstone introduced the McKenzie style driftboat to the province and pioneered the guiding of many of the larger cold water rivers of southern Ontario. Driftboat, walk and wade and float tubing trips are all available for trout, bass, steelhead and salmon. Our season begins in March for Salmon and Steelhead on the Saugeen River later focusing on the Grand River for Brown Troutand and concluding back on the Saugeen River and other tributaries until the freeze-up in December.

Our seasoned pro-staff prefer a different approach to guiding services. Guiding for us is also an instructional service, where we can spend the day teaching the many different methods and techniques of proper fly presentation and fly selection

We also teach you the best dry fly and nymphing techniques, streamer and traditional steelhead methods. Grindstone guides are also experienced in Spey or long rod flyfishing for steelhead and salmon on rivers like the Saugeen. This and other river systems are well suited for this method, and so are the fish. For information, just call the shop and we can tell you the areas to fish and patterns to use. Each year fly fishers, instructors and other guides come to Ontario to fish with and learn from Grindstone's professional guides. We are knowledgeable, courteous and friendly, which ensures the end result of a great day of fly fishing and a wealth of new information to catch, fight and land fish.

If steelhead and salmon are your quarry then rivers like the Saugeen, Beaver, or the Nottawasaga flowing into Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Georgian Bay offer some of the best fishing in eastern North America. You can enjoy a float trip or walk and wade on some beautiful remote wilderness rivers. Our migratory fish travel hundreds of miles to reach their spawning grounds. Ontario's rivers have some large gravel areas that provide rich habitat for natural reproduction, so the majority of our runs are wild fish. These wild fish tend to act more like trout so it gives us the opportunity to practise more traditional techniques for catching these wary fish. When the right conditions exist we even have the chance to present a fly on the surface. Average sizes of 26-32 inches are not uncommon. We invite you to come and sample fly fishing for these extremely tough but wary fish.

The world famous Grand River tail-water is also one of our great destinations. The Grand has become well known as a trophy river where large browns will feed on the excellent mayfly and caddis hatches throughout the day. From the opening of trout season (last Saturday in April) until the season ends (September 30) even a beginner has a good chance at catching a trophy brown trout.

Driftboat excursions are available for some exciting rainbow and brown trout action. Many of our rivers are open until December 31 and it's not only steelhead that inhabit them. On many steelhead or salmon outings we catch a good number of these resident trout so we usually take a rod on the drift that's set up for them. For those who have a difficult time wading, driftboat excursions give you a great option to see some impressive water and enjoy a first class fly fishing experience.

Warm water game fish are also abundant in our area. Smallmouth bass are an exciting opponent on fly gear. We have a great number of smallmouth that are 20 year old fish and exceed 20". During a late summer or early fall outing the weather can be glorious and it's the most pleasant time of the year to be floating a beautiful wilderness river.

Toronto airport transportation; accommodations in Waterdown at a local Bed & Breakfast; or a closer to the river accommodation can be arranged for your stay with us.
