Steelhead Primer 2004 : :
... April 17-18, 2004 ... contact us to register
Join Rob Heal and Dave Green of the Grindstone's Guide Staff for a comprehensive, in classroom and on stream presentation tailored to spring steelhead.
The two-day course will cover everything you need to know from clothing to tackle, plus the biology behind the fish and proven tactics perfected over years pursuing these magnificent game fish.
Steelhead Biology
This classroom section will include a look at the history of steelhead in Ontario, basic steelhead genetics (origin, stocking, range), migration and local movement, spawning behavior and sensitivity, food and energy requirements and general stream system behavior. Most importantly, this valuable, biological information will hold some keys to successfully targeting steelhead.
Wade and Fish with Environmental Responsibility
A brief presentation and open discussion on wading and fishing etiquette that will ensure that you get the most out of your next day on the river. Issues like how to properly fight land and handle steelhead with care, right through the photographs and safe release. We'll also cover where and when to cross, what to things to look out for (both in the water and on the bank), how to protect your space and how to share it. Particular attention will be paid to wading and fishing around spawning steelhead.
Cold Weather Fishing
This section will provide a brief look at the clothing requirements dictated by unpredictable early spring weather. We'll discuss layering ideas, outerwear, socks and under-wader layers, gloves and headgear. We will also try to provide some simple ways to be prepared and ensure that you never lose valuable time on the water.
Equipment Checklist and Tune-Up
Whether you are thinking about getting new equipment this year or carry your current steelheading rod with love and devotion, we'll discuss some helpful hints when it comes to fly fishing equipment and its maintenance. Early spring flies will be discussed and strategies to fish them will be presented. We'll also look at vests, chest/butt packs combinations, internal tackle necessities and storage systems, fly lines and leaders, fly rods and reels and other (perhaps forgotten) items in a steelheaders arsenal
Flyfishing Techniques for both Nymph Presentation and Spey Angling
Techniques and presentation will demonstrate the various approaches and fly's available to the steelhead angler. This will include topics such as casting to and fishing suspected holding locations; reading broken water and targeting moving steelhead in fast slots. Techniques, like the down and across swing; dead drifting through deep pools and runs; "stop and go" nymphing, and high sticking in pocket water will be covered.
Also included will be a discussion and demonstration of Spey fishing for steelhead covering a range of topics that will ensure that the angler properly and systematically fishes the distance and range of habitats afforded by this rewarding angling approach.
To many, the learning curve required to shift from resident rainbow trout or smallmouth bass to steelhead appears quite steep. This is an opportunity to speed up this learning process in 2 days by getting first hand infromation professional guides have learned over the years.
The two-day course will include transportation to the river from Grindstone Angling plus lunch both days. Cost will be 300.00 per person.
