Whether you are a novice or experienced angler, Grindstone offers a number of courses to improve your fly fishing skills. Our five Federation of Fly Fishers-certified fly casting instructors begin in April each year offering courses teaching the fine art of fly casting and fly fishing.
Special guest instructors and lectures are also offered at various times during the year.
In the fall we start our fly tying courses offering a complete range of classes for all levels of instruction. Check our schedule for courses, or to book private instruction.
So if you choose to make fly fishing your profession, we can teach you the skills required, including testing and certification. With over 130 years of combined experience, our qualifications are among the highest in the industry. Seasonal Fly Fishing Clinics
Introduction to Fly-fishing:
Classes are held on Saturdays beginning in May. You will be introduced to the rod, reel, backing, line and leader, learn how they all go together (including the knots) and the importance of each segment. The group will also discuss how a fly rod works and the importance of a balanced system. We will touch briefly on the different types of fly lines and then go to a local park and stream to learn the skills of casting a fly rod, how to read the water, and try some presentation casting for fishing purposes. After completion of the course, you will have a good basic understanding of your equipment. You will be able to get out and fish some rivers and streams and will be fully prepared to advance to the next level of learning ... schedule
Intermediate Fly Casting:
This is a more advanced course for those who are having difficulties in some areas of fly casting. These courses are for anyone who has completed the introductory class and wants to further improve their skills, or for experienced fly fishers who want to tweak their casting. It is very focused on the individual and your personal levels of skill. The instructors will analyze your cast and work with each individual to strengthen weaker areas. Private Fishing/Casting Courses:
Fly fishing courses can be custom-tailored to any length and can be held at any location. Our expert instruction can be arranged for businesses, clubs, individuals, families or groups of friends at the location of your choice. Our staff can design a curriculum tailored to your needs, interests, destinations, and skill levels.
Spey Casting Courses:
Two courses are offered. The first is an Introduction to Spey Casting with the second an intermediate and advanced spey casting course with guest instructor Dana Sturn from British Columbia.
Others courses will follow, such as casting with sinking lines and weighted heads or learning the double haul to achieve greater distance. Many courses will be available for you to choose from…stay tuned
Steelhead Primer:
Date to be determined, 2005 ... The two day course will cover everything you need to know from clothing to tackle, plus the biology behind the fish and simple to use fly fishing techniques for both nymph presentation and spey angling... details
Fly Tying
As in any other sport, the equipment, terminology and techniques can be very confusing if you are a novice. We will shed light on and simplify all the jargon associated with the art, and instruct you on how to properly dress a fly to correct proportions so your patterns will match the natural insects you are trying to imitate. Our on-premise classroom is a busy place where newcomers to the sport can learn the art of fly tying, and our many guest speakers can help experienced tiers improve their technique.
Introduction to Fly Tying covers the basics of fly tying, tools, materials, hooks, and how to tie basic flies. This is a six-hour course where we supply the tools and materials required to learn the basics ... schedule
The Intermediate Classes take tying to the next level where you will have a lot more flexibility, tying flies with patterns that challenge you. In addition, you will tie flies used locally on the Grand River system ... schedule
Finally in the Advanced Classes fly tying secrets are shared and complex processes are explained to tie the most challenging patterns. The class covers the more complex and difficult techniques such as: spinning deer hair, winging for dry flies, weaving, epoxy and glue gun techniques, and introduction to tube flies. Some of our advanced tiers include John Ponsford, and Joe Penich.
Fly Tying Club
Grindstone is pleased to announce a new Fly Tying Club organized at the shop enabling like-minded tyers the opportunity to share their passion and skills with fellow enthusiasts. Each week one of Grindstones Pro-Staff will be on hand for one hour each session to teach some of the local patterns they find effective.... details
