Spring Steelhead Season Starts

The time is finally here, we have been working diligently over the past few weeks getting everything ready for another great year on the rivers. This winter has been one of the longest for many years and although we’re all ready for spring weather to hit, we’re very thankful for the colder temperatures. This means one thing, the Steelhead have been delayed. This year the fish have held back and the rivers are just starting to get the spring runs of fish. The rain that we received in the last 5 days has elevated all watersheds and now( 4 weeks later than the last couple of years) the fish are starting their migration upstream It will take them a couple of weeks to get up river, that coincides with the opening of trout season. We are looking forward to great numbers of fish in the rivers this year and can count on good numbers into the month of June. We have many bookings already but there is still room for more. If you want to get a great steelhead trip in please contact the shop and we can put it together for you.

Saugeen River Steelhead News

Great news from the Saugeen River, The Ontario Steelheaders group have been working on the Walkerton fish-way and have just sent photos of a number of steelhead using the fishway to migrate further upstream. This opens up more waters for us. There is a great amount of gravel in this section of the river so we this increases the spawning habitat for the Steelhead which leads to a higher reproduction rate. The future is looking better all the time. I would encourage every-one to join the Steelheaders group. They could use the help if you have time or even your membership dollars will go a long way. Their efforts make the Saugeen and other rivers the “Great Steelhead fisheries” they are. www.ontariosteelheaders.ca
